Peter Parker watch out because Miles Morales is swinging his way through.
Marvel which is known for its Spider-Man, Thor, The Hulk, Fantastic Four and many more just debuted something that would put a smile on every Afro-Latinos face.
This will probably make you jump out your seat, please just do me a huge favor and don’t spill your coffee. Especially if you’re at work.
We have our first ever Afro-Latino Spider-Man his name is Miles Morales. This is truly essential in the comic world and if you are of Afro-Latino descent.
Growing up, the more mainstream superheroes were always predominately white characters it wasn’t very common that you saw superhero of color. And if they were they weren’t as popular as the rest.
Many young children of color or with multiethnic backgrounds couldn’t see their favorite neighborhood superhero that looked like them. But you can also question that if when these young children are watching their favorite superhero are they more focused on their heroic abilities or their color.
Hence, Marvel crossed a very important barrier by creating an Afro-Latino superhero. Although color might not be extremely prevalent for young comic fans it can be very beneficial for a child to see a hero or inspiration that they can culturally relate to.
It gives them more possibilities and a diversity of backgrounds to be accustomed to. A young child who might have an African American father and Puerto Rican mother can see Miles Morales, the newest Spider-Man and say “Hey! He looks just like me.”
Marvel first premiered Morales as another version of Spider- Man in the Ultimate Spider-Man in 2011.
Brian Michael Bendis, Comic book writer and Co-Creator of the more recent Spider-Man comics wants spectators to apprehend that Morales will be a key superhero.
Bendis told the New York Daily News that, “Our message has to be it’s not Spider-Man with an asterisk, it’s the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else.”

The newest Afro-Latino Spider-Man is a great start in identifying the black Latino community and giving comic books a more diverse platform. This will also bring them new comic lovers and consumers as time goes on.
Marvel is shinning a positive light and recognizing Afro-Latinos in many shapes and forms. We can only hope this will open more doors for the Afro-Latin acknowledgement and I believe it truly will with dedication and persistence.
