I’m from the Bronx, of course we don’t have accents. Let me stop.
Apart of my rebirth, is being unapologetically me. Authentic in all that I am. Meaning not shying myself or hiding my accent. I didn’t always think I had an accent, until I had an accent. That makes sense right? Tu sabes. Having the opportunity to visit different cities in the US, has opened my eyes about the diversity within tones, dialects, accents and just a persons voice.
As a Bronx native and adopted Chicagoan I feel my voice is very unique, it has a dash of that Caribbean mami, midwestern hospitality and some deadass and brick and oh nah in it. I have sometimes felt some people tried to categorize Bronx accents as ghetto or not corporate enough.
To me, if you like my resume and my experience, you better appreciate me. Bronx accents aren’t rude or unprofessional. There is something deeply rooted in us and that’s called rhythm, flow and we got seasoning. I mean when that dean or principal called my mom when I get in trouble in school that voice switched up real quick. But I knew underneath that, my mami wasn’t having that.
I was raised off respect, mannerism and understanding how to articulate. I had a very strict mom who didn’t play. However, sometimes I talk fast and I don’t want to slow down
. Stop telling Latinas to slow down, because our chanclas always close enough. If you trying to go there.
Stop telling Black women they sound mean or have an attitude. Race has nothing to do with accents.
A person that is Latina and live in Louisiana does not sound the same as a Latina from California. Can we be great and be ourselves and that be enough. Ya’ll assumptions are not wanted. When I formerly get to know someone, I love to ask where are you from? Or where have you traveled? Where someone was born does not always mean they was raised there.
Gypsies ? Military Brats? Refugees? Come on yall. I am so intrigued by the sound of peoples voice because I genuinely am curious about what makes them, them. I always tell people do not hide your accent, because its beautiful. Speak in what makes you comfortable.
Cardi B has instilled that rawness of not switching up to adhere to others. You either like me as I am or that’s tough. Like what?
Rihanna a true Bajan mami can buss a whine, and can cuss you in her native tongue if you play around. Man down?
Beyonce taught she can cross over to any language and any style of music and stay true to her country roots and her southern charm. TEXAS HOLD’EM
Amara said what she said her signature Afro, does not take away from her music, but is apart of what makes her a carefree Afro-Dominicana! Ayy!! Ayyy!
Moral of the story, your accent is top tier. Your accent is enough. Punto.
